    Putting in Your Hair Extensions

If you have temporary hair extensions and they are not already in your hair, you’ll need to first install them into your hair before braiding.

If you have a halo hair extension, watch the video on this page for a visual instruction for putting it on.

If you have clip in hair extensions, watch below video for a step-by-step on how to install your clip ins. Different braid styles have different techniques for putting in the extensions, so be sure to watch the videos we recommend.

How to Do a Basic Three-Strand Braid with Hair Extensions

Here are the how-to steps for creating a basic three-strand with your hair and hair extensions. Watch this video for a visual step-by-step.

    1. Create three even sections of hair, positioning them straight down your hair or by first pulling all of your hair to one side to create a side braid
    2. Starting with either the left or right strand out of the three strands, take it in your hand and place it across and over the middle strand
    3. That strand just became the new middle strand
    4. Do the same thing with the other side, alternating pulling the right and left strand across and over the middle section
    5. Once you reached the end of your hair, secure the braid with an elastic
    6. Use hair spray to hold the braid in place and flatten any flyaway hairs

If you’d like to create pigtail braids, create a middle part from your front hairline to the nape of your neck and braid each side following the steps listed above.

How to Do a French Braid with Hair Extensions

A French braid begins with three strands and threads in hair from either side, bringing in more hair from outside the three strands as you work down the head.

When creating a single French braid, install your hair extensions vertically on either side of a middle part. The braid will come down the middle of your head and so the extensions will be hidden.

Here’s another helpful video showing how to create French pigtail braids using AmazingBeautyHair hair extensions.

If you have a halo hair extension, you will be working over the clear nylon wire and incorporating the hair extension into the braid once you get to it.

    1. Put in your hair extensions
    2. Starting at the front hairline, create three small strands of hair right at your hairline
    3. Braid those three strands together one time
    4. With the next section, take a small amount of hair from outside of the three strands and combine it with either the left or right strand and bring that section over and across the middle strand
    5. Do the same thing with the left side, grabbing a small amount of hair and combining it with the left strand, to pull that strand over and across the middle strand
    6. Follow these steps, alternating the right and left strands until you reach the end of your hair
    7. All of your hair should now be in the braid
    8. Secure the end of the braid with an elastic
    9. If you’d like a thicker look, gently pull apart each section of hair to make the braid appear larger
    10. Spray the braid with hairspray to keep hairs in place

How to Do a Fishtail Braid with Hair Extensions

A fishtail braid uses two strands of hair instead of three. Here is the step by step:

    • Put in your hair extensions
    • Create two even sections of hair, either straight down the back or on one side for a side fishtail braid
    • Starting with either the left or right side, take a small section of hair from the outer-side of the section and bring it across to combine it with the other side
    • Do the same thing with the other side, taking a small piece of hair from that section and bringing it across to combine it with the other side.
    • Follow this process all the way down until you reach the end of your hair
    • Secure the braid with an elastic
