Fresh Hairstyles for Back to School

No matter if you’ll be showing up in-person or via Zoom, you can still look your best this upcoming school year. After hitting the snooze each morning, whip together one of these quick and easy hairstyles to suit your style, whether you have tape in, clip in, or halo hair extensions – or you’re taking a break from your extensions.

Not only will this list of fresh hairstyles for back to school have you looking at the top of your game, they’ll also help you shave off time spent in front of the mirror in the morning since most take only a few minutes.

Side Rope Braid

The rope braid looks more complicated than it actually is, which is great for your image this school season and great for your press-snooze-five-times morning schedule. Before you begin, spray some dry shampoo all over your hair to add texture and hold, and brush to remove any tangles.

Side Rope Braid

Starting at your front hairline on the heavier side of your part, take two sections of hair that are about one-inch in diameter. Twist each section and twist the two sections together (twisting away from your face), working your way down your front hairline, adding more hair as you go. You want all of your hair to be in the side rope braid. Secure with an elastic. Gently pull at some sections of the rope braid to add volume.

Half Top Knot Style

The top knot is still among the fresh hairstyles for back to school, but rather than simply throwing all of your hair up into a messy bun, the half up top knot looks way more intentional and polished. All you need are a few bobby pins and either a small elastic or regular ponytail holder depending on the length of your hair.

Create a section on top in a U-shape and play around to see how much hair you’d like to stay down and around your face versus up in the top knot bun.

Once you have the perfect amount of hair in your top section, secure it with the elastic or hair tie. Gently pull at a few pieces of that section (not the pony) to add some volume. Now, take the hair that is in the pony and backcomb with either a comb or your fingers to create some texture and volume.

Twist the teased pony into a bun on top of your head and secure with bobby pins. Shape the bun with your fingers until you love how it looks. If you want to prevent fly-aways, spritz with some hairspray.

Heatless Waves

Heatless waves are the ultimate get-up-and-go hairstyle for back to school. The night before you want to rock this look, shower or spray your hair with water so it is damp (not too wet).

Section your hair down the middle so you have two sections. Starting with one side, take a section at the top like you would if you were doing a French braid. Split that section into two and begin twisting it, adding in more hair as you go. Once you’ve twisted all the way down to the ends, twist that into a tight bun and secure with a hair tie. Do the same on the other side.

The next morning, simply take out the hair ties, shake your hair a bit and voila! You’ve got beautifully undone waves!

Space Buns

The space buns look is great when your hair just isn’t cooperating or you’re dealing with dirty hair since it works best on day three and day four hair.

Brush your hair to remove any tangles and knots. Spray some dry shampoo to add texture and grip. Split your hair into two sections, down the middle, leaving some face-framing pieces out in the front.

Begin with one side and tie off the other side to keep it out of the way. Use a brush to brush your hair up into a high pony that’ll become one of the buns. Create a messy bun with a hair tie, and use your hands to form the bun into what you want it to be and secure with bobby pins. Spritz with some hairspray for hold.

Bobby Pin Hairstyles

On those mornings before school when you don’t feel like braiding, twisting, or doing anything with your hair, adding a few cute accessory bobby pins in strategic places will look intentional and effortless. Here are a few different ways to use bobby pins to create effortless hairstyles for back to school:

Starting with your hair parted to one side or down the middle, pull one side before your ear and secure with 6-8 bobby pins stacked next to each other for an easy style.

With a middle part, place one bobby pin on either side at your temples. This style looks especially cute with loose waves.

Create a deep side part and taking the side with less hair, slick the hair behind your ear and create a criss-cross with two bobby pins. Add a third bobby pin underneath for added style.

Pull your hair back into a low pony and place two bobby pins on either side of your middle part at your temples and above your ears.

Create a half-up half-down style and secure the hair with four bobby pins, placing them in a triangle with one on each side and two on the bottom.
